- it doesn't compile from source by default - it requires ruby - it requires Xcode cli tools (2gb of proprietary blobs) - it is very slow even when installing binaries - it auto updates on every run - if a package is missing it'll just kill the install process

It happens on many M1 devices, it's the Pink Screen of Death... It's a software issue from a bad update Apple put out a while ago. You need to completely restore the machine (including the invisible EFI and Recovery partitions, this is what's actually corrupted) from Apple Configurator using another Mac and a USB cable. A simple reset and wipe wont do it.
