Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan @ Team Coco
I believe Sona is technically co-host of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, but I appreciate the opportunity to share my own observations about her role: given how much of the comedy is basically just blatant dishonesty, Sona inevitably plays the role of She to Whom We All Lie to Amuse Ourselves.
For the sake of my question, I’m going to strongly suggest that Conan and I have something uniquely in common: we both rely quite strongly on a sort of dramatized self-deprecation, editorially, in our various working voices/personas as a tool to control the weight of a given conversation as well as the narrative surrounding ourselves. In my case, though, it is far… far too often misinterpreted for whatever reason as actual self-admonishment - to a degree which family members, especially, feel compelled to actually interrupt me or disregard core arguments in something I’ve written just to make absolutely certain I didn’t really mean that when I said it about myself, right?
In overwhelming contrast to this happening in _my_personal life is the way all manner of guests/friends/employees and even complete strangers seem to either decide to mind their own business and let Conan shit on himself, or immediately understand that it is for the sake of their own entertainment.
My question for Conan, then, is essentially… How conscious is he of this element and how much of it is a direct result of his design over time?
