Everything that's not in italics reads as if it were written by someone having a schizophrenic episode.
This reads like a newly enlightened freshman in college who just bought their first thesaurus.
What thee heck? You like everything portla d is here for and you're complaining about....other people having interests? Get a grip on your individuality as it sits in a world of 7 billion, ya prick.
wow y’all. sincere thanks for your time and all the feedback. I didn’t expect so much though I gotta wonder if that White Fragility I keep hearing about may have something to do with it. regardless, I’m assuming this isn’t the right place to posts this stuff so I won’t be bothering ya again. props on the attention though - seems like y’all have really got an active community going here.
No offense, but NO place is the right place to post this. It’s incoherent, incomprehensible, pretentious, pointless, and boring. “White Fragility”.... insert earth’s hugest eyeroll. Try again after you’ve finished high school.
I can see how it could be interpreted that way, but my primary criticism of Portland culture is with the hypocrisy in its practiced ability to exclude and isolate other cultures by fervently celebrating ‘locally-grown,’ ‘hand-crafted,’ ‘DIY,’ etc etc, which is cool if you only want to be exposed to likeminded folks doing the same things (and, crucially, if you have the means to do so.)
I understand the desire to grow a beard out at 40 and spend life smoking weed and drinking microbrews between shifts serving $11 cocktails at novelty bars, but it’s fucking unhealthy (not to mention really boring) to be around the same shit all the time man. I know it’s not out of some collective white malice - it’s because we all want to feel comfortable, but there is absolutely nothing progressive or inclusive about staying comfortable. I have never in my life seen so many white people in a city this size, nor have I seen so many 20-somethings blasting the music their granddaddy’s danced to at their high school prom. so I guess my answer would be: do whatever you need to do, Portland, but if you’re gonna stay shut in your whiteness, learn to explicitly acknowledge that choice and your privilege in having it available... for your own damned health, if nothing else.
(btw this is what those signs are referring to when they use the term “white fragility”)
