Ancient History

the night stumbled through me to find
you on some arctic plain you once
called love.
an apt name for it, but not one i
could pronounce, too feral to be still.
i tried, in my own animal way,
wanted to show you how to become something
godless, but it didn’t quite sit right
with your careless hands, better
suited for god himself.
the day broke hard, truth-salt
amalgam stuck to your tongue
and in the light, you
told me i was nothing more
than a girl who didn’t fit her own skin,
let alone yours.
