when I’m homesick I dream in plastic colours / pink chopsticks and soy sauce bottles / a transparent glitter pencil case / a yellow bowl for eating noodles / a white cup inside a jar of flour / when my mother came she gave me a special spoon for ladling rice / white melamine with lilacs on the handle / when she left she gave me a heart of jade / wrapped in pink and yellow threaded silk / and when in one thousand years they sift through the volcanic earth / in the place where she lived / this is what they find / a blue basin for washing ginger / wreathes of Christmas lights / empty photo frames / plastic flowers in a jar / four pairs of sandals placed carefully near / what was once a door
