Possible Futures
— Jeremy Allan Hawkins
we come to agree on uncertainty & still take up residence
a palazzo leaning over the one gentle earthquake
that separates us
from the bottom of the laguna
a new cruise ship plows into the mainland
daily but we’re trying to grow
basil from seed
our daughter speaks three languages
to emphasize
how little we understand
her
we get exactly what we deserve—
an edifice
where’s the sex in that?
in the laguna
the rails are broken
but we can still follow them
by foot
eulogize the golden age of train stations
